Wood Shake and Shingle Roofs - By David Ness

Wood shake and shingle roofs are very distinctive due to their appearance. They are perfectly suited to specific architectural designs. Wood shingles are smooth and are uniformly shaped while most wood shakes feature a rough and uneven texture. Depending on the look of your home, or how you want your home to look, either may be suitable. Wood shake and shingled roofs provide an attractive look.

Wood shingles are typically ½ inch in thickness which tapers to hundredths of an inch at the top while wood shakes may vary from ½ to ¾ inches in thickness. The advantages of using wood shake and shingled roofing materials are mostly that they provide your home with a very attractive, unique and natural look. They blend in very well with their surrounding environment. This is particularly true for those homes in rural areas where the surroundings are dotted by trees. They also provide excellent insulation properties which can help to make your home more energy efficient, saving you potentially thousands of dollars over the course of a few years in heating and cooling bills.

Their disadvantages include price. Wood shingles and shakes tend to be much more expensive than traditional shingles and are subject to mold and mildew. Unless you have them specifically treated, they are also prone to be very combustible and may cause you to pay more for your homeowner’s insurance than other materials. In addition, they are also more prone to attract insects than other roofing materials. Although they provide a beautiful accent to your home, the disadvantages should be carefully considered before choosing this form of roofing material.
